Skulls are enormously important in art and literature for their symbolic
representation of any number of dark overtones. Death, decay, futility,
remorse, anguish, sorrow—all powerful psychological elements of art—can
be represented in some way by the skull. It's universally recognizable,
and as such, one of the artist's greatest tools for telling their
story.
